The PRESENTATION SISTERS

The Sisters of the Presentation Community was founded in Ireland in 1775.  At the time, England was in control of Ireland.  It was a very difficult time for the people.  the Catholics were persecuted by the government.  they had no political power; the children were not allowed to attend school; people were very poor.

A wealthy family, the Nagles, tried to help the poor.  Nano Nagle attempted to help the people, both by teaching the children in secret and caring for the sick and aged.  She started a religious community of Sisters to assist her.

In 1877 the Sisters were asked to respond to the needs of Indian missions in the Midwest in America.  They eventually came to Fargo.  Four days after their arrival they started a school.  In 1897 the Sisters started St. John's Orphanage in Fargo.  The Sisters conducted schools in New Rockford, Sykeston, Langdon, Sheldon, and Lidgerwood.  A Catechetical Center was located in Grafton and Fargo.

In the 1930's a group of men in New Rockford asked the Sisters to operate the hospital.  In 1941 the health care ministry spread to Carrington, in 1951 to Grafton, in 1955 to Langdon.  At the present time, Carrington and Park River are the two Presentation sponsored hospitals in North Dakota.

The Sisters brought a unique dimension to health care in these facilities - a holistic approach to healing.  Today this dimension is enriched with the evolution of pastoral care services, long term care facilities, home health care, and independent living communities for retirees.

In their traditional innovative nature, the Presentation Sisters joined the Sisters of Mercy in Omaha to form an unprecedented system for the stewardship of health care facilities and programs... Catholic Health Initiatives.  This was the first system-wide partnership of religious orders in the country.  The orders were committed to broadening participation in the healing ministry to the whole church.  Along with fulfilling their sponsorship responsibilities in health care, the Sisters continue to be sensitive to new areas of need in response to their mission of facilitating growth in faith and the promotion of peace and justice.

This growth in faith led to the creation of the Ecumenical Presentation Prayer Center in 1981 which if located in Fargo.

The Presentation Sisters' history is both rich and long.  There was a need for schools, so they built them.  They identified a need for the hospitals, so they built them.  They saw a need for parish education and ministries, so they began them.  They saw a need for residences for special education and they provided it.  They saw a need for a place for prayer and quiet reflection in the midst of the noisy world, so they developed such a place.  They saw a need to provide the opportunity for independent living communities for active, older adults which is located a Riverview Place in Fargo.

That's the tradition that lives on.  Nano Nagle said," If I can be of service in any part of the world, I will gladly do all in my power.
Nano Nagle was a woman of deep faith and trust... a woman with a sensitivity to people, especially the needy.  She was a woman of vision... a mission... a call.
