HISTORY of The Carrington Health Center Auxiliary
The Carrington Health Center Auxiliary was organized on December 5, 1985, for the purpose of assisting the Carrington Health Center in charitable work and to aid the best interests of this institution.
Bette Jerde, Activity Director and Volunteer Coordinator was instrumental in organizing the auxiliary. Duane Jerde, Hospital Administrator, was present at the organizational meeting and discussed the purpose of an auxiliary.
Pat Boyum was elected the first president. Eighteen persons attended the organizational meeting and within the first year there were approximately 50 members. Dues were $3.00 for one year and $100.00 for a Lifetime membership. The auxiliary is affiliated with the North Dakota Hospital/Homes Auxiliary.
The auxiliary is a non-profit charitable organization and everything that is earned through fundraising goes back into a project to benefit the Health Center.
The first official function of the auxiliary was to host the dedication of the newly completed Health Center on February 2, 1986.
Other projects the auxiliary participated in were: supplying the nursery with crib blankets, decorative wall hangings and rocking chair covers; acquiring new baby sleepers for pediatrics; providing toys, tables and chair for pediatrics; providing a courtesy cart; delivering flowers to patients' rooms; and helping in long-term care with hair care, crafts, baking, letter writing, reading and decorating. A tea and tours of the facility were held during National Hospital Week in May.
On October 24, 1986, a newly built gift shop was opened in the lobby of the hospital across from the administrative offices. A contest was held and Sheryll Fike came up with the name "Happy Heart Hutch." Proceeds from sales in the shop are used to purchase equipment for the Health Center and two leadership awards (scholarships) are presented each year. These are presented to someone entering any medical field. The shop is managed and staffed by volunteers under the leadership of the Volunteer Coordinator.
The executive board of the auxiliary consists of a president, first vice-president, second vice-president, secretary, treasurer, historian, six members-at-large and the past president.
The board meets monthly with the exception of one month in the summer. Four general meetings are held each year; one in January, a volunteer luncheon and general meeting in April, a general meeting in September and a Christmas party in December. A volunteer of the year and honorary membership is presented at the Christmas party.
Dues at the present time are $6.00 for one year, $15.00 for three years and $100.00 for a Lifetime membership.
